Key Findings · cycle

Five things that determine what you actually pay.

  • The exchange you choose matters less than the spread you pay. A 0.10% fee on tight liquidity is cheaper in total than a 0% fee on wide spreads. Binance, OKX, and Bybit lead on combined cost.
  • Referral codes attach a fee discount of 20% to 60% at registration. The discount is paid by the exchange, not the user. Once registered, it applies to every future trade for as long as the exchange runs its programme; we have not found a published expiry at any of the 11.
  • Welcome bonus claims are real but tiered. Headlines like "$30,000 bonus" are the top rung of a deposit ladder; a first deposit reaches a lower rung, and the ladder is on each exchange's promotion page — we quote the ceiling, we do not audit the rungs.
  • MEXC is the only exchange in this index whose entry-tier spot rate is 0% as of this cycle. The trade-off is wider spreads on illiquid altcoin pairs.
  • Two of the 11 quote optional KYC for basic withdrawal limits — MEXC and Weex — and both figures are quoted from the exchange rather than confirmed in a funded account. Bybit has required identity verification for its products since 2023, so any "no-KYC Bybit" guidance you meet elsewhere is out of date.

Frequently Asked

Common questions about buying Bitcoin in 2026

What is the cheapest way to buy Bitcoin in 2026?
As of May 2026, MEXC offers 0% spot trading fees on most major pairs, making it the cheapest exchange for direct Bitcoin purchases by published rate. Binance offers 0.10% standard, reduced to 0.075% with BNB token, and combined with deeper liquidity often produces a lower total cost (fee + spread) than smaller zero-fee venues. The 'cheapest' answer depends on whether you measure published rate or all-in cost.
Which crypto exchange has the highest welcome bonus?
Two programmes in our index publish a 30,000 ceiling: Bybit ($30,000) and Weex (30,000 USDT). OKX's programme reaches $10,000 and MEXC's $9,000; Binance publishes the smallest at $600. Every ceiling is the top rung of a deposit ladder, so a first deposit reaches a lower rung — the ladder itself is on each exchange's promotion page, which we quote but do not audit.
Do I need KYC to buy Bitcoin?
It depends on the exchange and the size of the transaction. Two rows in our dataset are recorded as optional or tiered, MEXC and Weex, and neither status has been confirmed inside a funded account by this desk. Bybit is not one of them: it has required identity verification across its products since 2023. The other nine require KYC for full functionality, and most exchanges require it for fiat deposits regardless.
A note on sources & conflicts

This publication earns affiliate commissions when readers register at exchanges through our referral links. Commissions are paid by the exchanges out of their own marketing revenue and do not affect the rebate or bonus the user receives. We do not accept paid placement: no exchange can pay to be ranked higher in this index. Fee figures are read from each exchange's own official schedule and re-read at least every 45 days; bonus ceilings, referral terms and KYC policies are quoted as the exchange publishes them. See our methodology for the full audit trail.
